Having more women in leadership positions isn’t just good for women, it’s good for society as a whole. That is why we at GIWL will continue to strive to improve the position of women in society across the world.

Professor Heejung Chung has been appointed Director of our sister institute, The Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London. She will take over in January from Professor Rosie Campbell, who led GIWL King’s for the past six years and will move to a new role in the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London.

Professor Chung is a leading expert in work and employment and how this intersects with gender and other social inequalities. Her current research is investigating the gendered experiences of hybrid and remote working, how this style of work is stigmatised – particularly for BAME workers and other marginalised communities – and policy solutions to tackle this bias.

Professor Heejung Chung said:

“In light of the changes we have seen around the world in terms of threats to women's rights and the rise of misogynistic views, even among younger generations, there is an increased urgency for us to address the issue of gender equality and women’s leadership. That is why I am delighted to take on the role of the Director of the King’s Global Institute for Women’s Leadership.

“We hope to be the leading voice in research and practice on topics around on how to improve women's position in the workforce and society. For us, leadership isn’t about getting the few to reach top positions. Rather, it is about how we can change some of the most problematic structures in our labour market and society to create an environment where women and other intersectional marginalised communities can thrive.

“Having more women in leadership positions isn’t just good for women, it’s good for society as a whole. That is why we at GIWL will continue to strive to improve the position of women in society across the world.”

Our sister institute, GIWL King's College London, was the first of the Global Institutes for Women's Leadership, founded by the Honourable Julia Gillard AC back in 2018. GIWL ANU was established in 2020 as GIWL's first international base, with a particular focus on advancing equality in the Asia Pacific region. We work in partnership with our London sister institute on a number of research projects, education programs, advocacy and engagement.

Professor Michelle Ryan, Director of GIWL ANU, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Professor Heejung Chung to her new role as Director of the King's Global Institute for Women's Leadership. Heejung’s expertise on the intersection of gender, work, and social inequalities make her the ideal leader for the Institute at this critical moment.

“I look forward to continuing our close collaboration with Heejung and the team at GIWL King’s as we work together to shape a future where society’s notions of what leadership looks like, what equality looks like, what success in the workplace looks like – and who can access it – are free from any prejudice based on gender.”
