There's a significant amount of time, effort and money being spent on workplace gender equality initiatives. There's only one problem – they are not paying off. That's because there is a tendency to focus on "fixing" women and gender diverse Australians by encouraging them to be more "assertive" or "confident", or to "lean in" to their power.

The issue with this approach is that it fails to address the underlying, systemic issues that are driving these gendered inequalities. From overt, toxic behaviour like sexual harassment, to subtler issues like biased recruitment and promotion practices, it's the workplaces that need to be fixed, not the women.

Our research examines workplace gender inequality for people at different stages of their career, and for different communities, focusing on how to address systemic obstacles to create fairer and safer workplaces for everyone.
