Women and gender diverse Australians are burdened with a disproportionate share of care responsibilities – in fact the monetary value of unpaid care work in Australia has been estimated to be $650.1 billion, the equivalent to 50.6% of GDP. However, unpaid care work is not recognised in GDP, and is often overlooked and undervalued in society at large.

This unequal distribution of care is not only unfair, it also has significant consequences for gender equality in the paid workforce because it reinforces gender stereotypes of the female ‘homemaker’ and male ‘breadwinner’ household model.

Our research is concerned with unpacking these stereotypes and understanding the gender dynamics at play behind them. Our research also explores gender equality in dating – how attitudes towards gender equality impact who and how we date, and how gender roles play out within relationships.
