In short:
The Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL) at the Australian National University is pleased to provide a submission for the inquiry into gender equality as a national security and economic security imperative.
- Women in Australian diplomacy face a diplomatic glass cliff -Gendered inequalities in Australian international affairs have evolved over time.
- Australia has never appointed a woman as head of mission (Ambassador/High Commissioner) to the United Kingdom or the United States, even though these are our most important security allies.
- Australia has stalled in its launch and implementation of critical strategies supporting intersectional gender equality.
- A people-centred ‘human security’ approach should be implemented to protect and empower individuals as well as to treat food, health, environmental, personal, etc. security as equal to hard security measures (defending states and borders).
- Despite major investment in Australia’s renewable energy sector—central to future energy and national security—women remain largely excluded.
